The Inconvenient Truth statement that I chose was, “ the Arctic ocean could be
ice free in summer by 2050.” From recent research I concluded that this statement is not
true, it will be a lot sooner then 2050. The researcher, Louis Fortier, scientific director of
ArcticNet, a Canadian research network, said that the Arctic was melting faster then
anticipated, causing the Earth to gather more and more heat energy. In 2007 alone,
1,290,000 square kilometers of ice shrunk. This is the lowest it has ever been.

A few technologies that are used to avert global warming are eco-friendly light bulbs,
windmills and hybrid cars. Hybrid cars are a higher technological solution to deal with
the effects of climate change. This is because it helps in less accumulation of carbon
admissions because they use less fuel and are less likely to over heat. Another high tech
solution is using windmills because they provide an alternate source of energy using wind
power. Some of the lower tech solutions would be recycling and eco- friendly or LED
light bulbs. Recycling is a great way to conserve energy. It uses a lot less energy to
remake then to make from scratch. Eco-friendly or LED light bulbs use much less energy
then regular light bulbs. It uses as little as 10% of the electricity that incandescent lights
use.

Ways we can change our lifestyles to lower our CO2 footprint are by using alternate
energy sources such as eco-friendly light bulbs, using smart cars to stop CO2 admissions,
and using solar powered objects. These all help lower our carbon footprint and help to
stop the uses of unnecessary power. Some other solutions would be to turn off the lights
or appliances when you are not using them, carpooling or using public transportation,
recycling and washing clothes in cold water. Our societal values affect the lifestyle
choices we are willing to make because sometimes those societal values make us greedy
and not willing for change. Although there are also times where people think changing to
save the Earth is cool, resulting in other people wanting to be “cool” and making them
want to change to become more eco-friendly. Strategies that a city like Vancouver or a
community like Sutherland could make to address global warming are that they can start
campaigns and fundraisers to help pay for more economical friendly appliances. I feel
that our government should have a large role in stimulating their peoples’ lives in efforts
to minimize climate change.
