The movie “An Inconvenient Truth” claimed that “the number of category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years”. The numbers of category 4 and 5 hurricanes are still increasing because of the increasing ocean temperatures due to global warming. For example, there was only 1 hurricane that became a category 4 or 5 hurricane in 1980. In 2010, there were 4 hurricanes that became category 4 or 5 hurricanes. This shows that the statement about the increasing number of major hurricanes is accurate.
Humans have many different ways of dealing with climate change. One way is to make concentrating solar-thermal power plants in deserts. This will allow a large amount of energy to be generated because of the amount of sunlight and heat there is. Hybrid cars can be used to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide that is created with more fuel efficient technology. There are other easy ways to prevent climate change like: eating locally to reduce transportation costs of food, using energy efficient light bulbs, turning down the thermostat and wearing a sweater, etc.
Society can make changes to deal with the problems associated with climate change. Lifestyle changes like walking more or using less energy can be made. Our societal values, like wanting to be wealthy, affect the decisions we make and prevent people from caring about global warming. Cities like Vancouver, or communities like Sutherland can get more involved in preserving nature by recycling, raising awareness, etc. I think that our government should play a leading role to support efforts to minimize climate change and make people do something about climate change.
