an inconvenient truth issues
Would the global sea levels rise by more than 20 feet if the polar ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica melted? The answer is yes, the water would be predicted to rise triple that amount if the ice caps melted. The reports that I found stated that if the water were to rise that much then almost all coastal towns and cities would be covered with water. If this were to happen then we would have to move to higher ground or build settlements underwater. Many species would die as a result of this, but marine species would most likely flourish for a time until the water began heating up as a result of no ice caps. Humans are using technology to deal with climate change in many ways. One way that is quite common now is the hybrid car or even more advanced the electric car or hydrogen fuel cell car. These cars can help to reduce the carbon footprint that an individual makes when traveling. A very high tech proposal to help mitigate global warming would be to launch trillions of light refracting disks into orbit, which would refract the heat and solar radiation making it not heat up the earth. These disk would be solar powered and have a lifespan of about 50 years. They would only be used as a last resort if things got desperate. Other plans are to place several huge mirrors on the ice caps that would contain solar cells. This would be intitially very expensive but would generate huge amounts of energy. Low stech solutions would be to paint roofs white, which would reflect about the same amount of heat that 44 billion tones of co2 would create. Another solution woud be to have large kelp farms which would soak up 70% of the co2 we emit every year. This would also create habitats for endangered marine species so it is a win-win. The easiest solution is to simply plant more trees everywhere.http://www.
The lifestyle changes we can make would be to eat less meat because that is a major source of methane, and to use public transportation more. Our societal values are a factor in the emissions we produce because the bigger car or house you have the more co2 you produce and everyone want a big house or car. Communities like Vancouver and Sutherland could address global warming by introducing credits for taking the bus or planting trees, things like that. The government should make laws limiting the emissions you can put out and to use the money that they gain from the carbon tax to plant trees or improve the efficiency of public transit or research renewable energy that does not have an impact on the environment.
